The U.S. Coast Guard’s proposed changes to aids to navigation in the Northeast — including the removal or relocation of numerous physical buoys — have sparked a complex but necessary conversation. The Coast Guard aims to modernize navigation by increasing reliance on electronic systems like GPS, AIS, and updated digital charts. On paper, this may improve efficiency.
But for many working mariners, physical buoys remain critical — especially in tight quarters, heavy weather, or low-visibility situations. They’re not just backups; they’re primary tools of safe navigation when digital systems can’t deliver 100%.
As a professional mariner and founder of the Professional Captains Association (PCA), I’m watching this closely. We support innovation, but not at the cost of safety — and certainly not without input from those who actually operate vessels every day.
This is exactly why the PCA exists.
We are building a unified voice for working captains and maritime professionals — not only to keep you informed, but to represent your real-world concerns in decisions like this.
If you’re a current or aspiring captain, an industry peer, or someone committed to safe, professional navigation in U.S. waters — this is your moment to get involved.
