Module 3: Charts and Publications (3 hours)

This portion of the online course includes information you will see in the NAVIGATION GENERAL examination module.

To complete the module:

  1. Review the Charts and Publications video lecture below. (The slides are also available as a PDF reference document under the "Materials" tab above). Be sure to "Mark As Complete" when you have finished watching the presentation.
  2. Read through the NEW Charts and Publications slide deck below. Take notes as needed and complete any "Knowledge Checks" as you go through the slides.
  3. Read the chapter in Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship about charts and publications.
  4. Review Chart No.1 and the various symbols, abbreviations, and terms used in government charts.
  5. Familiarize yourself with the Coast Pilot and consider how to use this publication in your own navigation needs. (Please note this is one of the open book resources allowed in the Examination.)
  6. Familiarize yourself with the American Practical Navigator. First published in 1802, the text has evolved since that first issue and continues to serve as a valuable reference for marine navigation in the modern day.

  8. Test your knowledge and pass the Quiz with at least a 70%
