Dan Somma, USCG Cdr (Ret)

The Professional Captains Association is thrilled to have Dan Somma, Marine Terminal Compliance Advisor at Marathon Petroleum Company LP, present at the upcoming Pro Seminar Series. His talk is aimed at providing inspirational and supportive advice for small boat captains.

Dan is the program lead for dock safety and compliance at forty marine, river and Great Lakes logistics and storage terminals across eleven states. Marathon is a leading, integrated, downstream energy company headquartered in Findlay, OH.

Prior to this role, Dan was the company emergency preparedness coordinator for 81 light product and asphalt terminals. He is a retired US Coast Guard Commander with 21 years of experience in marine inspection, port operations, emergency management and marine terminal compliance. He served on the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf and Great Lakes coasts and completed special projects in the United Kingdom, Hawaii and Italy. He is a qualified US Coast Guard Incident Commander, Captain of the Port and Federal On-Scene Coordinator and served on several Type 1 responses including Hurricane Maria in San Juan, PR and Deepwater Horizon. He holds an MS from the State University of New York Maritime College in transportation management and an MS from The George Washington University in engineering management. He is a lead internal auditor and holds both ISO 9001-2008 Lead Auditor Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Lead Auditor in Safety Management Systems (SMS) certifications.
